VALUES (Gradation) in SKETCHING !
Illustrations done with pencil look attractive because of the use of light and dark shades.
A through understanding of the various gradation or values is therefore important in order to achieve the necessary effect.
THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT WAYS TO ACHIEVE GRADATION :
(1) Varying pressure on the pencil.
(2) Varying the grade of the pencil.
(3) Repetition and overworking: (a) Hatching (b) Cross hatching.
(1) Varying pressure on the pencil :
_____________________________________________________
This is the easiest method of Shading.
Rub a 2B or 4B pencil on paper tu blunt the point.
Without lifting the pencil, draw short lines which are
closely placed. Vary the pressure to obtain gradation.
The greater the pressure, the darker the shade you will get.

Different values can be obtained by using pencils of different grades.
(3) Repetition and overworking:
In this technique you can create a variety of textured shades by repeating short, forcefully drawn lines.
(a) HATCHING (Short strokes)
(b) CROSS HATCHING
This Technique consists of drawing lines from different angles in such a way that they cross each other to create deeper shades.
The more acute the angle, the greater the depth of shading.

HOW TO HOLD THE PENCIL WHILE SKETCHING !
The Writing position is more commonly used for sketching and shading. You may start this position while shading. The Under-palm position may be adopted at a later stage.
SHADING POSITION
You will need a certain amount of practice to be able to work in the under-palm position. it helps in more forceful sketching and shading.
